Are you self-conscious about your smile? Do you feel like your gums cover most of your teeth? A gummy smile may be a nuisance to you, but fortunately, it is not out of your control. At Midtown Dental Care, we offer professional gum lifting services using top-of-the-line equipment and the safest, most effective methods.

What Is Gum Lifting?

Gum lifting, also known as gum contouring, is a simple but life changing cosmetic service. This service includes an individual undergoing local anesthesia while a professional dentist utilizes a scalpel or laser to reveal more of the gums. This helps to create a better ratio of teeth showing to gums, and results in a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing smile. The entire process takes about one to two hours, which means that the patient will be out of the office and at home healing in little time.

Signs You Need a Gum Lift

Overgrown/excessive gum growth and swollen gums are hallmark signs that a patient needs a gum lift. If you have been feeling embarrassed of your smile and believe that your gums are overgrown or asymmetrical, the best thing to do is talk with a professional dentist. He/she will be able to sit down with you and discuss your expectations and whether or not you are a candidate for the service.

The Healing Process

One of the main concerns of any patient getting a dental procedure done is the recovery period. We often get asked questions like:

How long will it take to heal?

Can I go to work the next day?

Will I be in pain?

The healing process for this procedure is typically anywhere from 7-10 days. This depends on your ability to follow instructions from your dentist, as well as how fast your gums can heal. We recommend that patients eat soft, cold foods during the days following the procedure, and rinse with a saline solution to keep the gums clean and debris-free.

Most patients have no issue returning to work the day after the procedure. We have had patients who reported still feeling groggy post-procedure, but other than that, there are no adverse effects. Make sure to continue taking care of your gums though, even at work!

Patients are under local anesthesia during the procedure. This means an individual will feel no pain during the procedure. However, he/she can expect to feel minor discomfort while healing once the procedure is complete.

Shifting to Gum Lifting
