At Midtown Dental Care in Midtown East Manhattan, we understand that getting the help you need during a dental emergency is crucial, especially when it involves broken teeth. Dr. Jaskaren Randhawa and her team know the importance of being able to access quality dental care in these situations as soon as possible. It is important to know when your situation is a dental emergency, and what you can do immediately to fix it.
Broken teeth can be a result of a wide variety of factors such as excessive teeth grinding, chewing on or biting into hard foods, trauma to the mouth, or even abrupt changes in temperature within your mouth that occur when you eat something extremely hot and then immediately swallow something cold. According to Dentistry Today, broken teeth are the third leading cause of tooth loss in industrialized nations. Some broken teeth will be evident by looking into the mouth, while some may be harder to see and could be noticeable by certain symptoms such as sensitivity to temperatures that are very hot or cold, pain when chewing, or swelling around the gums. If you are feeling pain, these are common symptoms for mouth pain:
An abscessed tooth that has become infected
Tooth fractures
Damaged fillings
Loose or broken crowns
Gum disease such as periodontal disease or gingivitis
Grinding or bruxism
Oral trauma involving the teeth
A chipped or broken tooth could be considered an emergency if it causes extreme pain, discomfort, bleeding, or swelling. Broken teeth can cause additional problems such as exposed nerves and bacterial infections that could lead to greater problems down the road.
If there is no immediate sign of these symptoms, you are more than likely able to wait for a standard appointment to see your dentist. However, even broken or chipped teeth that are not causing immediate swelling can become very painful while eating or drinking. In the event of a broken tooth, you should see a dentist as soon as possible.
While you are waiting for your dental appointment, there are some measures you can take at home to manage pain associated with a broken tooth.
Rinse your mouth frequently. You can use plain warm or saline water to keep your mouth thoroughly rinsed. This keeps the area around the tooth clean and lowers the risk of infection.
Avoid hard foods. Try to stick to soft foods that will not cause further damage to your broken tooth until you are able to have it repaired. Eating hard foods may cause further damage and cause additional pain.
Ice the affected area. A cold compress or ice pack on the outside of the mouth against where the broken tooth has occurred can help to alleviate pain and swelling.
Take over-the-counter pain medication. Low-grade over-the-counter medicines can provide temporary relief from substantial pain. Make sure to follow the specific provided instructions for dosage depending on your age and weight.
If you have experienced a broken or chipped tooth, schedule an appointment for a repair right away. Midtown Dental Care is readily available to help you with your emergency.
