Everything You Need to Know About Invisalign

Did you know that approximately 4 million people each year opt for Invisalign? While traditional braces are another popular option when it comes to crooked teeth, Invisalign offers a plethora of benefits that traditional braces do not. At Midtown Dental Care, we have advised countless patients to take the Invisalign route.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is essentially two plastic aligners that slowly but surely move a patient’s teeth toward proper alignment. In order for these aligners to be made, a professional dentist will take a mold of the patient’s teeth, as well as x-rays. This information will then be sent to Invisalign. Invisalign will create the aligners, and send the patient new aligners every 1-2 weeks. The patient is expected to wear these aligners about 22 hours a day, except for when he/she eats. Each set of aligners will be a little different in order to slowly shift the teeth, until the teeth have met the patient and dentist’s goals.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign is the newer, more modern cousin of traditional braces. It also has the power to align teeth over time. However, it also offers benefits that braces do not, such as:

It is clear. This means that the days of people staring at your teeth and braces are over. Nobody will even be able to tell that you have these aligners in.

You can take them out when you eat. When braces are on, they are on for good until your teeth are aligned. This can make food get stuck in a patient's teeth, and be hard to brush out. When it comes to Invisalign, you can eat, brush your teeth, and put your aligners back into a perfectly clean mouth.

They are less invasive. Braces require glue, metal braces, wires, and more. These must be cemented to your teeth. Invisalign is less invasive, and does not affect existing teeth in such a way.

Am I an Invisalign Candidate?

Unfortunately, not every patient is going to be an Invisalign candidate. This is because though Invisalign can treat a variety of dental issues, it cannot fix teeth with many complications. In order to be an Invisalign candidate, the patient will need to have good overall health, and not be a smoker. In addition, Invisalign can only treat the conditions below, so the patient will need to have one or more of these minor dental problems:

Moderately misaligned teeth

Overcrowding

Underbites

Overbites
